Leaders In Training - The Present

Last week I wrote a post regarding the history of the Leaders In Training (LIT) program. In this article you will learn what the LIT program is doing here in the Grand Rapids area. But before we go into what the LIT program is doing presently, I feel we need to cover a bit more of the vision for the LIT program.
Why does the LIT program exist? We minister mainly to the 5-11 year old age group at our sites. If we didn’t have something for the 12-17 age bracket, we would probably lose those kids. They would no longer attend Power House since it is geared more towards a younger age group. God has called us to make disciples and not converts. Matthew 28:19-20 says, Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” In my mind if we didn’t have a program for the young adults ages 12-17, we would be essentially abandoning them. This is why the LIT program exists. We want to see our Power House kids grow up from elementary age to adulthood. By the time they reach adulthood they should be mentored in such a way that they are making quality decisions for their lives.

Currently in Power House we have about a dozen LITs. The LITs help with the sound, games, songs, and passing out giveaways at the end of each Power House event. We have given each of them a very discipleship-driven workbook called Getting a Grip on the Basics for Teens by Beth Jones. The LITs do the workbooks at their own pace and, after completing a chapter, are rewarded with a small prize like a $1 McDonald gift certificate.
The most important part of the LIT program is the relationships that are built between our site leaders and LITs. People don’t care what you have to say until they know how much you care. One of our site leaders has taken their LITs to go horse back riding. Another site leader brought their LIT to a basketball game.

Really our LIT program is in its beginning stages. We are in the process of getting a van so we can pick them up at the minimum of once or twice a month. They would be brought either here to Reslife or to one of our houses for a time of fun and Bible study. Please join us in praying in a couple who can oversee the program and really take these kids under their wing. Is God tugging at your heart to get involved?
